In 2016, our chosen charity The Island were donated a holiday flat from a member of the public. After three years of having the Bridlington flat they are in urgent need of raising £250 to help purchase vital contents for it.

Nigel Poulton, Mentoring Services Manager says “The coastal getaway is used by our vulnerable children, their families and carers which has proven to help them to reconnect, relax and enjoy each other’s company away from their daily environment. The contents in the flat needs replacing with new items due to general wear and tear. Any donations made towards our appeal will enable us to purchase the necessary items so that we can ensure the families have a stress-free stay so that they can focus solely on rebuilding bridges with one another.”

Since becoming a registered charity in 2008, they have enhanced the quality of life of over 2,500 vulnerable York children, not just through one-to-one mentoring, but also through school-based mentoring, youth club work as well as girl and boy groups. The generous donation of the holiday flat has enabled many families whose children use our services to take time out of their chaotic lives and to simply enjoy spending time with one another.

A parent of one of The Island mentees who did not want to be named said “I grew up with no money and didn’t have a holiday until I was an adult. I never wanted this for my own children but am unable despite working two jobs to afford even a weekend away. I’ve been desperate for a space we can be together, away from the daily grind, and to have a laugh. I honestly didn’t think this was possible until my son needed to use The Island’s services. The short break away did a lot of good for me and my children. It gave us the chance to relax and unwind as well as the space we needed to rebuild our relationships with one another. Thank you so much to The Island team for making this happen, it’s been such a life-changing experience for us.”
